If you are covering AstraZeneca's latest financial results, please find below a comment from Sheena Berry, healthcare analyst at Quilter Cheviot:
"AstraZeneca delivered a solid set of earnings with sales increasing 7% in the third quarter and in the first nine months of 2026. Sales and earnings in Q3 both beat expectations, with oncology being a particularly strong area as sales increased 17% with Tagrisso, Imfinzi, Calquence and Enhertu delivering double digit growth. Guidance for the full year has been reiterated with earnings per share expected to increase by the low double digits.
"The business also announced a significant restructuring programme where it wants to be 'reshaping for sustainable growth’ which is expected to deliver $1.5bn in annual pre-tax savings by the end of 2029 with the resources to be invested in the company's pipeline. That pipeline remains full with the group highlighting that readouts in 2027 have a collective peak year revenue potential of more than twenty billion dollars.
"These results should reassure investors after a turbulent period for what historically has been a really strong business. AstraZeneca suffered a couple of trial failures recently and media reports of merger talks with Bristol Myers Squibb earlier this year and while this could have proved to be a distraction, AstraZeneca has reassured investors. Focus can subsequently shift to 2027 and the group’s catalyst path, including the anticipated anti-cancer AVANZAR readout."
